Government hospitals are the backbone of Tamil Nadu's healthcare system. Behind every emergency, surgery, and patient recovery are Postgraduate (PG) doctors who work tirelessly, often without adequate rest.
Based on discussions with PG doctors working in government hospitals, several challenges require immediate attention.
Key Concerns
- Doctors work for more than 12 hours a day, often extending into continuous shifts.
- Many work all seven days a week without a guaranteed weekly day off.
- Lunch breaks are frequently missed because of heavy patient loads.
- House Surgeons spend valuable clinical time collecting laboratory reports instead of treating patients.
- Shortage of nursing staff increases the workload on doctors.
Suggested Reforms
- Provide one mandatory weekly day off for PG doctors.
- Ensure a dedicated lunch break during every shift.
- Implement structured shift timings to reduce fatigue.
- Recruit additional nursing staff to improve patient care.
- Digitize laboratory workflows so reports are available electronically, reducing unnecessary movement and saving valuable time.
Conclusion
Doctors dedicate their lives to saving others. Providing them with humane working conditions is not a privilege—it's a necessity. Better support for doctors ultimately means safer, faster, and better treatment for patients.
We respectfully request Honourable Chief Minister Joseph Vijay to consider these reforms and initiate meaningful changes in Tamil Nadu's government hospitals.
